Godzilla 2 King of the Monsters

Working on Godzilla (2014) with Andrew Baker and Gareth Edwards at Weta Workshop was one of my favourite film making experiences of my life, so when we got the opportunity to contribute to King of the Monsters I was hypes as all-get-out!
We only ended up doing a little bit of pre-pre-pre-production stuff but I still really enjoyed it and, again, I can't believe my luck getting to work on such wonderful material that I love so much. The early talks with director Michael Dougherty were fun and exciting, he really knows his stuff with these classic Toho creations.

I took the opportunity to do some quick pencil concept sketches of King Ghidorah, the greatest of all monsters.
The response that this was a bit obvious and dull and, to be honest, I think they were right. But I got to draw Ghidorah for a movie!

I looked at real-world large flying creature inner structures but wanted to stay true to the flat-footed man-in-a-suit legs and iconic but unusual insectish wing arrangement.
